Vintage American Folk Art Wood Carving 2 Ton Tony Galento Boxer Beer Drinker

  

This hand whittled and colorfully painted WPA style pine figure dates from the 1930s-40s and measures 8 ½ tall on its ¾ thick x 4 7/8 square base. RICH with character and fun details from the striped top to the heart and arrow tattoo on his hairy arms, this work describes a folk character dear to the artisans heart. A paper label on the bottom identifies the subject as Two Ton Tony Galento. Domenico Antonio Galento (March 12, 1910 July 22, 1979) was a very successful American heavyweight boxer admired for his tenacity, but not so much for his physique. Two Ton Tony was one of the most colorful fighters in the early 20th c.

Ring who wrestled an octopus, and boxed a kangaroo and a bear for publicity. Known to be a prodigious beer consumer, he was not above entering the ring intoxicated and allegedly fought with his trainers. The work is unsigned and comes from a rural Michigan estate sale.
