Troy Webb TN Folk Art Carved Wood 14 Animal Menagerie Coal Miner & Boy Figures

  

A hand carved wood fourteen (14) animal menagerie, with coal miner man that has movable arms, a little boy, and what I believe is suppose to represent a toy canoe with a little man in it (I could be wrong about its representation, but it is what makes the most sense in this scene) figures, carved by Tennessee folk artist Troy Webb. Webb was a Tennessee coal miner who used to carve wood during down time at the mine, to break up the monotony and relief from the stress of this extremely hazardous and strenuous profession. His wood of choice was buckeye wood, as he loved its color and overall look; plus its ease of use for carving.

From this is wife Carrie began to carve and paint his pieces, as well as his children and his brother-in-law began to carve. Even after some notoriety, especially in the Appalachian folk art scene, Troy continued to stay shy about his work and his work is scarce to come by.
