This offering is for a wonderful antique mid 19th century footed coconut cup. The front of the cup features a design of a spread winged American Eagle with a banner above it's head that reads "IN GOD WE TRUST". The back side of the cup features a British Cost of Arms that reads "SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE HONI". The cup would likely have been carved by a sailor to pass idle hours, most likely as a give for someone at home. I'm not at all sure for the reason of the British Coat of Arms being on the Same cup with the American Eagle but it makes for an interesting research opportunity. The cup stands 5 3/8 tall and the condition is seen in our photo's. There is a tight crack that extends from the lip down app. 2 ending near the right side of the shield on the Eagles chest.
The shield itself is slightly recessed so it may have been designed to hold an inlay of some sort. However, there is no glue residue or method of attaching anything visible so I'm assuming it was simply done this was as a design element. The cup has a wonderful deep even patina and an untouched surface that just begs you to pick it up. If additional photo's are needed or you have need of answers to questions we do not address we will be happy to supply them. WE USUALLY SEND OUR INVOICE WITHIN 1 HOUR OF THE AUCTIONS ENDING.
