Large, Early Tramp Art CHIP CARVED SEWING BOX Folk Art ROPE TRIM Pin Cushion Top

  

Beautifully detailed early and rather large tramp art chip carved sewing chest/box in very nice condition for it's age. It measures 15 inches across, 9 inches tall and 10.5 inches deep.

Nice details - green'velvet' fabric and pad on the top to serve as a pin cushion, with matching patches on all sides; rope trim around the lid and the base, held by brass tacks; other brass tacks (now tarnished) used as decoration in other areas; red velvet interior. Chip carving is five layers deep throughout with very little wear.

Overall a bit dusty but the original varnish is plain to see on the underside of the lid and the bottom of the box. Velvet all shows wear, with little remaining on the top except the bare fabric and some green remnants. No repairs, no missing parts or pieces - even the rope trim is still intact and complete. This is a rather large, very early piece, done by a craftsman who cared about his work.
