Vintage Gloria Lopez Cordova of New Mexico Wood Carving Folk Art of San Rafael

  

Vintage 1970s-1980s wood carving sculpture of Archangel San Rafael by Gloria Lopez Cordova of Cordova, New Mexico. Gloria's carvings can be found in the collections of major museums including the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

This wonderful Folk Art sculpture is of San Rafael. It shows him holding a fishing pole with his right hand that has one fish on the hook hanging from the string fishing pole line and his left hand holding two fish hanging from a leather strap. As the story goes, Raphael the Archangel appeared to Tobias and healed his father's blindness by directing Tobias to catch a fish, burn it and anoint his father's eyes with the ashes. Friend and protector of the young and innocent, he is also regarded by some as protector of travelers.

He is Chief of the Guardian Angels and of all humanity. The Physician of God, he is Patron Saint of the sick and especially those with eye ailments. This sculpture has meticulous carving detail and is signed on the bottom. He stands approximately 10 inches high.

Of note is that the leather strap holding the two fish is quite worn and fragile as shown. It has had one owner and been on display in his private collection since 1983.
