Beautifully done piece out of Lancaster Pennsylvania. Art Shoemaker, graduate of Millersville University with a B. In Industrial Arts, has been teaching metal, wood, and graphics for almost 30 years at Elizabethtown Area High School. He has taken additional classes from Temple University, Millersville and Penn State Univer sity and holds a certificate of graduation from Famous Artists School.

He has a wide knowledge and the crea tive ability to work in many mediums. In the art of woodcarving, he is self taught over the last 20 years. Art has received many local and regional prizes including first places and Best of Shows in top Pa. He exhibits in museums and galleries including William Penn, Penn State University and Leba non Valley College. His carvings can be found across the country and overseas.

As past president of the Pa. State Guild of Craftsmen, the local guild, and as State Fair Chairman, he has learned much about other crafts and craftsmen. He is also a member of Lancaster Woodcarvers and National Woodcarvers Association. For the past 10 years, he has taught workshops in his studio, at schools, and for the craft guild.

Art has written and illustrated several booklets for these workshops and has given programs and demonstrations to civic groups. In addition, he judges many shows. Each carving reflects a distinct humor and realism.

Most are his own designs with a special emphasis on carica tures, but he also carves many animals and birds. Each piece is handcarved, intricately detailed, with a unique finish combining oil stain over water color and then a paste wax.

An occasional dusting with a soft shoe brush enhances the carvings. Woods most often used are sugar pine, basswood, catalpa, walnut and cherry.
