Vintage Hand-Carved Duck Decoy - Kennebunkport, Maine. This charming duck decoy is a true find, unearthed from the rafters of an old fishing/hunting shed I acquired in Kennebunkport, Maine.
Unlike mass-produced decoys, this beauty is hand-carved and hand-painted, crafted with a utilitarian purpose: luring ducks to a pond. Its simple, unadorned design reflects its working-class origins. The decoy's two-piece construction, with a head secured by a sturdy 16-penny nail, showcases its functionality. The body measures approximately 14" long and 7" tall, featuring an aged leather tethering loop and a custom-fitted lead weight for perfect water balance. I encourage you to closely examine the photos for a complete assessment, the decoy is in good condition with no major wood cracks. The head remains firmly attached, resting on a separate, equally secure neckpiece. There's a single missing section on the left side (4 1/2" x 1"), likely caused by a knot failure in the wood. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
