Old African American carving, Crucifixion, Arkansas, Religious, Christian Jesus. African American folk carving of the crucifixion of Jesus and the two thieves, carved in deep relief from a salvaged board with straight saw marks and pumpkin pine on reverse. The front was finished with a hand planer and shows the blades marks. It is carved in deep relief and painted in 5 or 6 colors.

The sides are painted red; to top and bottom in gray. The blood drops dripping from Jesus palms are red and almost carved in the round. Ominous storm clouds and rock outcroppings. Jesuss cross is painted a putty brown; the two thieves crosses are gray. The sky is a contrasting pale blue.

This was an accomplished carver and artist; there must be numerous other examples of his work. Additionally, there are many fine details.

Even the 4 nails that attach the cross bar to the vertical beam, chains Please see the photos for all the details. Approximate dimensions are 24 x 12 inches. The thickness varies due to the hand plane, but, it is 1 at the thickest. The carving was done in the early 20th century. The salvaged wood dates to the 1850s.

The glossy paint is excellent with slight darkening. The bottom right corner is notched. There is a shallow scratch on Jesuss face.
