Here for your consideration is a "Rare" antique early 1900's wood carved figure signed by Carl Johan Trygg, born in 1887 in Skagershult Narke, Orebro Country, Sweden. He was one of nine children and left home at twelve to make a living. He worked as a Clockmaker, Shoemaker, in a Logging Mill, and in a Laundry. He began carving and he is one of the recognized masters of the twentieth century flat plane style woodcarving Scandinavian style in a caricature folk art manner carving everyday people... Tramps, hobos, farmers, workers in trade, etc.
This figure is a Wood Carving of a Sea Captain/Sailor/Fisherman wearing a Pea Coat and a Captains Cap. He is an adorable man with crows feet eyes a bulbous nose a ruddy complexion and a smirk for a smile. His button up coat has stately carved buttons. The Captain's cap has a slight image of an anchor on it. The smudge of white on the back of his coat seems to be original to the piece. This was a treasured piece of a 97 year old Scandinavian acquaintance of mine.Measures approximately 7 1/4" H x 2 1/2" W. Figure is carved from a single piece of wood in a flat plane style.
