John & Clara Sawyer Vintage Running Coot Duck Wood Carving Folk Art Decoy EXCL! I wasn't able to find much information about John Sawyer but I believe he was a highly acclaimed carver from Maryland, there are references to him in the Ward Foundation carving competition in Salisbury, Md (1974). This figure of a running "Coot" is very well executed with lifelike detail to the bird's carved head features (glass eyes), plumage and scaled legs / feet.
The hand painted finish shows rich color and fine line with subtle shading. The bird is mounted on a striking piece of figured driftwood. The driftwood measures 16" long and 6 ½" wide. The coot is 10 ½" long, 3 ½" wide and 5 high. The base is signed in hand script "coot" "John & Clara Sawyer". The carving is in excellent condition with no damage, some trace surface wear.
This John Sawyer running Coot would make a fine addition to your collection of vintage Duck Wood Carvings or Eastern Shore Maryland / Virginia wildlife memorabilia. Get images that make Supersized seem small.
