Antique Vtg 19th C 1800s Folk Art Carved Coconut Cup Love Birds Cupid Bow Flower

This offering is for a beautifully carved coconut cup. The cup dates from the early to mid 19th century and was likely carved by an American sailor on a lengthy voyage. The cup features a beautifully carved design of a central shield within a wreath cartouche topped by a Chippendale style carved shell.

Flanking the central design above an below are high relief carvings of love birds on an urn with a torch, bow and quiver above, as well as wreaths that encircle the central motifs. The cup was quite possibly carved by a sailor to pass the time and given the love bird motifs it was probably made for a sweetheart at home. The length is 4.5 and it measures app. The condition is excellent but there is a very tight 1.5 crack in one end. The surface has a wonderful untouched patina.
