Mirror or opening for a picture is 6" X 8 1/2". Please examine the pictures carefully as they are part of the description. SO, What is Tramp Art? Unique objects represent an unusual type of folk art.

Tramp art is the whimsical name given to a folk-art form that was popular ca. Boxes, picture frames, religious artifacts, and decorative objects were chip-carved from cigar boxes and, less often, from packing crates.

The wood was notch-carved with squares, triangles, and rectangles, then layered to created three-dimensional, boldly geometric pieces. Some are inlaid with carved hearts, leaves, or stars; others feature applied decoration made of found materials like bits of china or mirrored glass. Larger pieces can run to mantel clocks and tables with drawers. The name conjures images of carefree hobos whittling in the open doorway of a moving boxcar. Though no doubt there were itinerants who bartered wares for food or shelter, tramp art is both fragile and labor intensiveand thus not consistent with a nomadic lifestyle.

According to long-time tramp-art dealer Clifford A. Wallach, the term was first mentioned in a 1959 article by Frances Lichten in Pennsylvania Folk Life magazine; she called it tramp work.

Articles in the 1960s and later called it tramp art; dealers found the name enhanced the mystique of these largely undated and unsigned pieces. Please see photographs for details. Please view the photos; they are part of the description. Vintage commonly refers to an item that is 20+ years old.

Thus, it also implies there may be flaws or imperfections. For this reason, I list them as being in good vintage condition or very good vintage condition--and usually not excellent condition. I try to take pictures of any very obvious imperfections. I try to describe everything accurately, and I try not to sell items that are seriously/obviously damaged (but that can be somewhat subjective), and I could also miss noticing something.

Is extremely important to me. If you receive an item and are not satisfied in any way, please contact me BEFORE leaving feedback. Items that are challenging to pack safely may take a bit longer. I do not charge additional for packing materials, and I recycle as much as possible. Please note that some items cannot be combined due to size, weight or safety of item.

I will determine how to most safely package the item once I have the exact quantity, and you may receive more than one package.
