Very Rare 1880 Hand Carved Folk Art Lions Head. From a Hunting Lodge in Hungry. This item was bought from a retired antique dealer in Schloss Ambras, the Lions head was originally a part of the interior décor of the main banqueting hall in Innsbrucks and we have this writing by the dealer on an invoice supplied to us. If you require this please message in advance. STAND NOT INCLUDED IN THIS SALE.

Archduke Ferdinand II acquired the castle in 1564, the year he became ruler of Tyrol, and transformed it from a fortress into a palace. He was the mastermind behind the Spanische Saal (Spanish Hall), a 43m-long banquet hall with a wooden inlaid ceiling and Tyrolean nobles gazing from the walls. Fans of the macabre will delight in the Chamber of Art and Curiosities, the Archdukes impressive collection of portraits of giants, dwarves, the hirsuit, infirm and, even more curiously, Vlad the Impaler and human faced lion heads. For sale is a wonderful decorative and very rare mid to late 19. Century hand carved wooden lion head, made in the style of macabre and curiosity.

This item is very folky in visual look and feel. I believe it was obtained from the Schloss Ambras Hunting main hall. This item would have been a part of the main celling wooden carvings and had pride of place. The overall condition of this item is good, considering their age and previous use. The item is structurally secure and not broken, the old varnish on the wood is a bit scuffed and faded due to age.

The teeth are all in place and although restoration in the past is visible through cracks and breaks these have been well restored with old brown coloured wax (close up pictures show detail of damage and repair). This original folk art macabre curio item is super rare a single item and comes from a very prestigious hunting lodge.

Its got pride of place in my store and I can assure you wont find another one so a one off. And especially view all close up photos supplied as part of this advert. Size: H 17 x D 9 x W 13. Please view some of our other original theatre items in our store or website if you so wish.
