SET OF 3 MID CENTURY FOLK ART. Charming set of 3 Mexican Feathercraft birds in hand carved frames, perfect for display! Overall size including frame 15 3/8" x 7 3/8". The colors remain bright and true, no fading. Minimal shed/loss to feathers consistent with age, overall very good.

The importance of the Bird and its plumes reaches far back into Mexican history. The Tarascos, a noble race of Indians, used feathers to adorn the robes and crowns of their Kings. Their Capital, up to this day, bears the name of Tzintzuntzan, or the Hummingbird.

Feathercraft is a very ancient art, the originator of which is said to have been Quetzalcoatl, or the Feathered Serpent, a light skinned deity that taught the Toltecs their art. This took place many years before the appearance of Hernan Cortes, the Spanish conqueror, way back in 1521, who himself spoke of the feathered jewels of the Toltec people in highly admiring terms. This art requires great skill, imagination, a lot of patience and artistic taste so as to recapture the enchantment of millions of birds, as colourful and charming as their multicoloured ancestors. The slow process of dressing up a paper pattern with tiny feathers at the top, and then gradually increasing in size as the body is modelled, recalls in its lively colouring the haunting song of birds that lived and sang in ancient forests many years ago. We have listed several sets of the Mexican Feathercraft birds! Please carefully review all photographs. Additional photographs and information available upon request.
