The consignor made note that these most unusual terrestrial and celestial globe ornaments, "came from a lodge in Brown County" and he never cleaned them up or repaired them. Measuring just 23 3/4" and 23 7/8" tall x 5 square at the base, each is turned and hand carved in wild cherry with dry, original surfaces and some wrought iron nails as joinery.

The columns are 2 7/8 maximum diameter and you will note rubs on the corners and 5 missing pieces of tiny molding at the top of the square bases. One rarely encounters these small-size orbs (actually more ovoid) on columns and these are so quixotically stylized with careful, naive carving that they really are standouts in the Folk sculpture realm. The masonic tradition dates to the first 2 quarters of the 19th c. In this part of the world; I would date them to the 2nd- 3rd quarter based on the style of carving.
