John L Maxwell (1922 - 1981) was a former cabinet maker who founded the Upper Cumberland Craft Center of Cookeville, TN. John was mostly known for making Dulcimers, having created a unique shape for the instrument. He built around 2300 dulcimers from the mid-60s until the late 70s. His dulcimers were very popular during this period, being displayed at Graceland and the Grand Ol' Opry, as well as being presented to then-president Richard Nixon. In 1971, one of his carved wooden sculptures, a heart with an arrow through it, was accepted into the Ripley's Believe It or Not!

" museum and displayed among unusual or "impossible artwork. This carving of a tree stump with an arrow is a similar such piece, with the arrow carved so that it moves within the sculpture, yet can not be removed.

A great piece of Appalachian "folk" art from a master craftsman. 4.25"x7.125"x1.75.
