A rare pair of hand carved, polychrome (multi color) primitive-style folk art statues of a Spanish matador/bullfighter and Senorita. They were very recently acquired by me at a consignment shop. They have vintage handwritten labels affixed to the bottom which say they are by "Sarried, " (Italian) though Sarreid is spelled incorrectly.

There is another retail-type label with a reference number. They are very well-executed pieces with great details, coloring, and a nice antique/vintage patina. Colors used in costume of matador are brighter--red, green, flesh tone, with shiny metallic gold accents on shoulder pad decoration, sides of pants, and the base.

Colors used in costume of the Senorita are more subdued--brown, gold, russet, black, flesh tone, with less shiny metallic gold accents at base, on mantilla and fan. The statues remain in very good condition. I did take the liberty of touching up three minor chips on outer edge of the Senorita's mantilla using a charcoal pencil with a very good result. Photographs were taken before I performed the touch-up, and I will be happy to provide those if requested. The Senorita measures 16 1/4" in height; 3 3/4" in width; 2 5/8 in depth. The matador measures 15 3/4" in height; 3 5/8" in width; 2 5/8 in depth. Protective felt pads on bottom. Very impressive pieces with a great presence.
