Like folk carver of yesteryear, Dan uses only a pocket knife to make whimsical birds, eagles, parrots, cats, dogs, lions, roosters, and figures. Afterwards, Donna, his wife, helps to seal the carvings with gesso and polychrome to give them a colorful and age-old finish. Having been inspired by a local history course in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1968, Dan's first style was heavily influenced by native approach to coloration and carving by early Pennsylvania carvers Schimmel, Mountz, and Simmons. Today, his style is distinctive as his own work but still gives the look and feel of an old piece. All of his carvings are marked on the underside with carved initials "DS" or "D + DS" or signed as D.
