Later in life he became friends with Elijah Pierce who taught him the craft of wood carving. He primarily portrayed racism, political figures, religious subjects and the ongoing battle with temptation. I met him in the early 1990's after discovering his work in a book about folk art. After my husband and I moved to Atlanta we often visited Leroy and his family.
It was Leroy who encouraged us to pursue art as a career. This piece depicts the devil fishing for the temptations of greed, lust, gambling, alcohol, and drugs. It is in it's original condition. We downsized and came to the difficult decision to part with this piece as well as another one that is listed. It measures 24" x 11" x 1.
