Folk Art Artist Daniel Rose - God is Love Whimsey in a Bottle. "Bless the Lord O My Soul" is a Whimsey bottle made by Daniel Rose and is personally signed and dated inside the bottle Daniel Rose, May 15, 1919 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. This is just two years before his untimely death and by then, his skills were finely honed and the quality of his whimsies is fantastic. A large number of his bottles contain just one large fan but this amazing bottle has four wooden fans with interlocking blades! There is a very large wooden fan in front a white bow tied around the support post, and a ball and cage carving near the bottom.

In the back of the bottle are three additional carved fans; one is medium sized, and the other two are smaller fans. In the middle of this Whimsy is a wooden plaque with the words "Bless the Lord O My Soul" written on it, and the wooden base has the words "God Is Love" written on the front. There are four carved wooden animals on the base; two rabbits, and two squirrels on podiums. Under the base and written in pencil is, "Daniel Rose, Johnstown, PA" and the date May 15, 1919.

Daniel Rose is one of the best known bottle Whimsey Artists of all times and his works are among the most desired and valued by collectors today. He was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on February 25, 1871 and died in an automobile accident on June 26, 1921.

When he was nine years of age he became afflicted with rheumatism and by the age of 19 Daniel was an invalid except for his forearms and a hand. He took up whittling to occupy his time and during his life it is believed that he made over 120 bottles containing fans, religious messages, chairs, musical instruments, a blacksmith shop and tools, spinning wheels, and mechanical bottles.

Few artists have ever shown the skill and artistic abilities that are found in Daniel Roses bottles. His fans were exquisitely carved with notches, scallops, holes, and other designs. The fans would open to a full 270 degrees or more and he would sometimes include several fans of different sizes or shapes in a bottle. His bottles almost always contain carved or handwritten religious messages such as God is Love, Love God, Have Faith in God, Praise the Lord, Seek the Lord, and Fear God and in the case of this bottle God is Love, and Bless the Lord O My Soul. He loved including small carved animals in his bottles including squirrels, rabbits, birds and fish.

He would occasionally include tools such as carved one piece scissors, a hammer, or axe in the bottles. His carved fans were sometimes mounted on a small wonderfully carved ball and cage. He signed his bottles under the wooden base including his name, date, Johnstown, PA and sometimes a dedication. This bottle has "Daniel Rose, Johnstown, PA" and the date May 15, 1919.
