Hand carved wooden Sperm Whale. 36" X 9-1/2" Folk Art wall plaque with hanger on back.

A wall-mount carving by master whale carver Clark Voorhees. Signed on the back with his stylized "CV" incised signature and stamped C VOORHEES. After establishing himself in his craft, he moved his carving business to its permanent home in Vermont. His marine mammal carvings were offered through the Four Winds Craft Guild on Nantucket. The majority of his carved whales were 17-1/2" in length, this 36" carving represents his grandest size. The paint is in excellent condition with edge wear on tail. It appears that the lower jaw was reattached (this is barely visible from the front) and seems to have the original finish over the hairline crack. It is possible this was done by Voorhees to facilitate the carving of the teeth. All teeth are present and in excellent. The red color inside of the mouth is very nice.
