Beautiful Vintage Hand-Carved Nordic / Sámi Style Folk Art Knife & Sheath. This knife features highly detailed, hand-engraved geometric and floral folk patterns on both the handle and its custom-fitted, L-shaped scabbard. Based on its design, this piece heavily mirrors traditional Sámi craft (Duodji / Sloyd).
The distinctive curved "pistol-grip" style of the sheath was historically designed to allow for an easy draw even while wearing thick winter mittens. Handle & Sheath: Crafted from dense natural bone or reindeer antler, showing a gorgeous cream-colored aged patina.
The handle is accented with alternating dark bands (likely curly birch or leather spacers). The Blade: High-carbon steel utility blade featuring a classic, razor-efficient Scandi grind. Shows beautiful hand-shaped grinding marks and a dark, rustic finish. Tang: Authentic through-tang construction, securely peened over a small metal washer at the pommel (see photos). Maker's Mark: The reverse side of the sheath features a hand-carved, stylized monogram/initial mark (appears to be "JT", "FT", or similar artisan initials).
This knife is in excellent vintage/antique condition. The bone/antler is structurally sound with no major cracks, only natural wear and a beautiful aged patina.
The blade shows minor oxidation and signs of traditional hand-sharpening, giving it incredible character. The knife fits tightly and securely into the custom-carved sheath.
