Vintage American Folk Art Amish Carving of a Couple Traveling on a Horse & Buggy, ca. This hand-carved and -painted American folk art sculpture of an Amish couple driving their horse- drawn buggy. This wonderful carving is believed to be Amish-made and made of tulip tree wood or pine with some metal parts including the wheels and suspension springs. Great attention was paid to the accuracy of the wagon's structure and the leather horse rigging. There are small handmade metal clips that hold the four wheels on the base.
The horse has a proud upright folk s y quality as does the Amish couple, who appear very focused on the seriousness of their drive. The carving retains its original painted and varnished finish and is mounted on a chamfered tulip tree wood base. The underside of the base is marked in pen with the date 1882, which may refer back to an event or time in the history of the maker's family. Dimensions: 7-1/8 tall (at couple), 16" overall length x 6" depth, Horse: 7" long x 6-1/4" tall, Couple & Wagon: 8" long x 6-1/2" tall.
M inor repair to the man's hat (re-glued rim) and some minor losses to the leather- horse rigging particularly on the horse's head (see photos). The finish is original w/ only very minor wear to the carving and base.
