Intricately patterned, carved wooden dog is a type of Mexican folk art sculpture known as an Alebrije. Originating from Oaxaca, Mexico, these brightly colored figures typically depict fantastical or real animals and are carved from local copal wood. The art form was pioneered by Pedro Linares in Mexico City using papier-mâché, but Oaxacan artisans later adapted the style to wood carvings. The figures are first carved from green (wet) copal wood, left to dry (which can take months), and then meticulously sanded and hand-painted with vibrant, detailed patterns, often reflecting Zapotec designs. In Oaxacan tradition, the animals are often associated with tonas and nahuales, which are spirit animals or mystical creatures believed to guide and protect individuals.

They are a significant part of Mexican cultural heritage and are highly sought after by collectors worldwide. The carving and painting of the figures is often a family effort, with different members specializing in different stages of the process. Notable artisan families come from villages like San Martín Tilcajete and San Antonio Arrazola.
